The company was founded in 1850. Its common stock trades as “AXP” on the New York Stock Exchange. In 2007, it was ranked as the fourteenth most valuable brand in the world by Business-Week and Interbrand, estimating its worth at over $20 billion.
In November 2008, American Express gained Federal Reserve System approval to convert to a bank holding company. American Express's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer is Kenneth Chenault, who took control in 2001.
Its headquarters are located in New York, but also has major offices throughout America, Australia and Canada, with its UK offices in Brighton.
American Express credit cards are used all over the world, but as well as credit cards, American Express also offers Charge Cards and Business and Travel services.
