Business account openings increased over the course of January.
An increasing number of
business accounts were opened in January.
The British Bankers' Association (BBA) reports that while December saw a seasonal low in the number of accounts opened by small companies, such activity rose as 2010 got underway with 44,445 products taken out in the first month of the year.
David Dooks, statistics director for the BBA, says that although "trading conditions for small businesses continue to be difficult", the rise in
business bank account openings has been "encouraging".
New lending to such companies stood at £534 million for the month - while this is up from the £511 million issued in December it is significantly below the £669 million that was lent at the start of 2009.
Over the past year
loans and other forms of credit issued to small firms has by risen two per cent.
This rise in lending comes as Lloyds TSB revealed business optimism is increasing. In the firm's latest Business Barometer study 65 per cent of firms questioned claim to have greater confidence in the economy than they did three months ago.
