Which4U wishes to remind any visitors who have not yet filed their 2010/2011 self-assessment tax returns to HMRC that they only have a week left to do so before incurring a £100 penalty.
Any outstanding self-assessment tax returns must be sent online by the end of January – even if no tax is due – to avoid the £100 penalty. All tax owed for the 2010/2011 tax year must be paid by this deadline too. A delay of three months incurs a further penalty for each additional day the return is late.
HMRC has issued a reminder that its online systems may run slightly slower as the deadline approaches. Last year, over half a million people chose to file online on the January 31st deadline.
Although the organisation is confident that its systems can cope with this volume of traffic, it concedes that the filing process is likely to be quicker and easier if it is completed well in advance of the final day.
HMRC is also reminding VAT-registered business that all VAT returns are to be submitted online from the spring.
Online filing currently applies only to newly-registered firms and those with turnovers exceeding £100,000. In April, all 1.9 million UK businesses registered for VAT will have to submit their returns online and make payments electronically for accounting periods beginning on or after 1st April 2012.
In February, HMRC will write to all traders not already required to submit returns online and advise them of the changes.
To submit an online VAT return, you need to be registered for HMRC's VAT Online Service. To do this, visit HMRC online, select "Register”, and follow on-screen instructions.

[EDIT: 30th January - HMRC has announced a two-day extension to its deadline due to strike action taking place on the original deadline day. Provided that returns are filed by midnight on 2nd February, no penalty will be incurred.]
