Bank of Scotland (not to be confused with the Royal Bank of Scotland) is commercial and clearing bank based in Edinburgh. It has a long history dating back to the 17th century.
As well as being the only commercial institution created by the Parliament of Scotland to remain in existence, it is also the oldest bank in the UK that to continues to operate and was the first bank in Europe to print its own banknotes. It is no longer Scotland's central bank, but it still continues to print its own sterling banknotes under legal arrangements.

In September 2001 the Bank of Scotland formed part of HBOS, following the merger with Halifax.
