American Express: Credit cardholders can save with cashback

Cashback and loyalty reward credit cards could help consumers save money during the credit crunch, an American Express executive has suggested.

Opting for a credit card with a cashback feature or reward scheme could help consumers save "hundreds of pounds" compared to shopping with a debit card, according to an American Express executive.

Tom Allder, vice-president of UK lending at the credit card firm, stated that people who make purchases at petrol stations or supermarkets with a debit card may benefit by switching to a credit card reward scheme.

"Simply by paying for these items using a cashback card or reward card ... people could be earning themselves hundreds of pounds of free cash," he said.

According to American Express data, one-quarter of people with a credit card offering cashback save the extra money, while 21 per cent use it to help pay for household bills. Others spend it on entertainment, save it for Christmas or treat themselves or their family to something special.

Earlier today, Apacs published figures which revealed some £60.7 billion was spent on credit cards in the UK in 2008.

    Fantastic card! Me and the mrs signed up for one of these a few months ago and would recommend it to anyone.

    Just need to make sure you don't end up with interest charges as this can outweigh the returns you get.
