Significant numbers of those looking to take their initial steps on the housing ladder are placing an increasing amount of money into savings accounts.Just under two-fifths (38 per cent) of prospective first-time buyers who are already putting cash toward

Details of a new credit card have been unveiled by MBNA.

The financial services firm's United Mileage Plus American Express Credit Card offers zero per cent on card purchases for the first three months.

In addition, zero per cent on balance transfers is offered for the first year that the account is open, although a three per cent handling fee will apply.

Coming with a variable interest rate standing at a typical 15.9 per cent, the credit card allows holders to earn mileage points when they fly with United Airlines and other members of the Star Alliance group such as Lufthansa, bmi and Singapore Airlines.

Points - which can also be earned for renting cars, staying at hotels or using any other products and services from Mileage Plus programme partners, can be redeemed for upgrades, air travel and United Red Carpet Club membership.

Greg Reed, president of MBNA UK Card, pointed out the initiative will be of "real benefit to frequent travellers".

Last January, MBNA launched the bmi American Express Credit Card which offers 1.5 destination miles for every £1 spent using the card, with a plus version of the card providing two miles per £1 spent.ADNFCR-2079-ID-18994428-ADNFCR
