In the run up to Guy Fawkes' night, people are being urged to ensure they are covered against the risks of bonfires and firework displays.
The Co-operative Insurance Society (CIS) has issued the warning to anyone planning a Guy Fawkes' display, no matter how small the bonfire or few the fireworks.
"It?s surprising how many people decide to have a bonfire or fireworks party in their garden without giving any thought to the possible consequences if things go wrong," commented Gideon Ingham, head of insurance products at CIS.
"Even if you're just having a few friends round you should ensure your household insurance covers you against injuring someone, or causing damage to a neighbour?s property.
"It's also worth giving some thought to where you site your bonfire ? don?t choose a spot too near the house or near a garage or garden shed, just in case things get out of hand."
The 'public liability' section of home insurance policies can cover against damage to other people's property or injury as a result of fireworks or bonfires.
Around 42 per cent of injuries occurring on Guy Fawkes' night take place in a private or family party, and over half of people injured are under 13-years-old.
