Ten per cent of Britons have experienced crime on holiday, new research from Lloyds TSB Insurance reveals.
The total cost of holiday theft so far this year could reach £200 million, and that is excluding the forthcoming ski season.
A third (32 per cent) of people said they were victim of theft in hotels, while 18 per cent said they had been robbed on the street.
A further 11 per cent had been robbed on a plane, bus or boat, ten per cent had fallen victim to thieves at a tourist attraction, and eight per cent at a beach.
Phil Loney, managing director, Lloyds TSB Insurance, said: "Although we're all aware of the risks of foreign travel, when we're actually on holiday, it seems we can slip into a false sense of security. It's all too easy to forget that crime can still happen when you're having fun.
"With the summer months over, many of us will be coming home realising we could have done much more to deter potential thieves. For those who don't even have insurance to cover the costs, the reality could be even more sobering. It is absolutely vital that anyone travelling abroad, checks, checks and checks again, that they're insured."
