Bonfire night is often one of the most traumatic times of the year for pets, Sainsbury's Bank has warned.
Sainsbury's predicts that around 5,000 pets could be treated for firework-related injuries and trauma this year, costing pet owners up to £1.6 million in vet fees.
As a result pets should be treated with special care and kept inside on November 5th, the bank adds.
David Pickett, pet insurance manager at Sainsbury?s Bank said: "Our research shows that during the course of a year, as many as 40 per cent of pet owners will see their cats and dogs suffer from behavioural problems such as depression, moodiness, fatigue and loss of appetite. In some cases vets are prescribing sedatives for upset pets.
"Don?t let the noise from fireworks be the cause of this kind of upset, take special care and keep your pets inside this 5th November."
If your pet is distressed by the noise on bonfire night, Sainsbury's advises not to constantly cuddle or comfort them, as this could be seen as rewarding their fearful behaviour.
