Volcanic ash 'highlights need for travel insurance'

Holidaymakers have been reminded of the need to buy travel insurance the moment they book a flight or vacation.

The Icelandic volcanic ash eruption should serve as a reminder to Britons for the need to have travel insurance.

With the incident causing flights across the country to be grounded, Direct Line notes that affected travellers who opted to purchase cover ahead of their journey could find they are able to make claim as a result of a missed departure or travel delays.

As a result, those with either single trip travel cover or annual insurance may be able to get their money back or make new travel arrangements at no additional cost

However, Direct Line spokesperson Jennifer Thomas claims those wishing to purchase single trip insurance now will be unable to make a claim in the event of any disruption caused by the ash "as they are buying cover in the knowledge that there is a problem".

"This highlights the importance of buying travel insurance as soon as you book your holiday or flight," she states.

The advice comes as Esure urged those wishing to indulge in adventurous sports and activities while on holiday to first check the terms of their insurance policy, as some 13 per cent of travellers have suffered an injury while taking part in such pursuits.

Sorry, I completely disagree with this as most insurers are washing their greedy little hands of this. There are a small minority of insurers paying out and I take my hat off to them but the majority are not covering. The ones that have left people high and dry should be named and shamed. The ones that have paid out should also be named so people know where to go for insurance!

I agree. I have Insurance with O2 Insure (underwritten by Mondiale) and they have refused to pay out due to the volcanic ash incident being an 'Act of God'. I could understand if there was volcano that erupted in Heathrow and took out the entire fleet of BA's Boeing 737/ 747's but this is something that the Insurance industry should pay out on giving some compensation for travellers to cover their costs of disruption. Otherwise there is no point in taking out any form of travel insurance.

I agree completely with the other comments - we HAVE got annual travel insurance with Insure and Go who are saying that we are not entitled to any compensation for our cancelled holiday - 'volcano' isn't named in their policy as a reason to pay out! Might as well have saved £106 on the policy as it's not worth the paper it's printed on...

An act of God would be something unprecedented - like a 1 in a million shot....even one in 10,000. This has happened before and will happen again, so they should pay up. Its really an adverse weather condition. A meteor strike would be different I suppose.

At the end of the day insurance is a gamble and the bookies always win, but they shouldnt be allowed to shaft.

I think we should publish a name and shame list - highlighting the good and bad guys in the insurance business.

I love it... Insurers not offering insurance for something you know exisits and could happen lmao... what's the bloody point of any insurance then? Thats like saying we won't insure your for fire or theft because you know it exisits! We all know insurance is one of the biggest scams in the world so now there is actualy a legitmate reason to get insurance, i.e. you could be stranded in a country with no money and you want to protect against it and no one wants to cover you because 'you know this problem exisits'. British firms make me puke the way they try and get out of paying but take your money soooo easily. This world is so aimed at screwing the ordinary people and milking them for whatever they can get under the protection of the government it's absolutely disgusting. We have hardly any rights any more and are just getting squeezed and put out to work like battery hens in order to fill the coffers of the rich. There's hardly any recorse for the normal man left in society, if you are not rich and can't afford to deffend yourself in court you are screwed and the government doesn't give a damn. As long as they have their big salaries + expenses.. provided for by us as well. Look how the banks managed to weasle out of the overcharging fiasco.. they dragged it throuigh the courts for 3 years when everyone in the country knew it was a con. They finaly get ruled AGAINST in court and look like having to pay up when they do yet another appeal and suddenly after 3+ years the court ruling is overturned in a matte rof weeks it's 'Ok the banks were alright to charge us £30+ a time for going 1p overdrawn on accounts.... and no one does anyhting more about it... disgusting. Really sick of this country...

This article is just a sales pitch for the travel insurers (and the commission this site presumably earns from them).

What this has proved is that just buying travel insurance doesn't mean you're covered.

We paid good money to Insure and Go, but they refuse to pay up. The reality is that paying Insure and Go means that you are Un-Insured and Go thinking that you are.
