Insurance 'vital for motorcyclists'

New figures have revealed that motorcycle accidents have increased markedly in the last five years.

New figures released yesterday (June 16th) show a significant increase in the number of bodily injury claims made against motorcyclists over the last five years.

According to Aviva, there has been a rise of 57 per cent in such claims in Britain since 2005 - a hike that will have affected single insurance and car insurance policies up and down the country.

Also, motorcycle claims have risen by 51 per cent in the same period, a statistic that Aviva indicates is primarily down to riders carrying passengers more often.

Nigel Bartram, Aviva motoring expert, said: "Carrying a passenger can affect the way a bike handles in relation to stopping distance, cornering and steering, so we are advising riders to take extra care and to seek expert help if not completely confident."

It is estimated that motorcyclists account for 34 per cent of all fatalities on British roads, meaning that annual insurance cover could be more vital then ever for people who use this mode of transport.

Most major insurers offer cover for motorcyclists so it may be a good idea to compare savings prior to taking out a policy.
