Bonfire night party plans are hotting up as families around the UK prepare for firework festivities. But anyone who intends celebrating is encouraged not to 'play with fire' and to take time to acknowledge personal safety precautions and measures to prevent damage to property.
Never build the bonfire too near to your house or any other building. And always follow the instructions carefully on how to store and light your fireworks. Remember, a rogue rocket or bonfire spark could be responsible for causing a huge amount of damage. Every year insurance companies receive hundreds of claims for damages as a result of fireworks going astray.
Before setting light, home-owners should check that their home insurance covers damage to their own property, their neighbours' houses and any injury to a guest. Most, but not all, insurance companies cover against mishaps, but don't take it for granted that you're covered. Confirm the details of your home insurance policy with your insurer before November 5th.
Your buildings insurance should cover the damage to the house itself and your land, while home contents insurance covers free standing items both in the house and outside in the garden. Check whether you have accidental damage included with your policy, which should cover damage caused by fire to anything in your garden or your neighbour's garden. Most policies include personal liability cover as standard to the value of £1 million, which will cover claims for damage made against you by your guest or neighbours.
If you charge people to enter your firework party it may be construed as a commercial event, for which you will need to have specific business liability insurance.
Besides the risk of fire and personal injury, there is a high risk of burglary around November 5th. Home-owners, whether they are the host or guest at a party, should pay particular attention to securing their home. The distraction of fireworks gives burglars the perfect opportunity to strike. When you go out on bonfire night, leave the lights on and windows closed with the curtains drawn. For additional effect, leave the television or radio on. Make sure you lock all doors and shut all windows. Activate burglar alarms and keep jewellery and cash out of sight - preferably in a safe or even a fake food tin.
