Householders are risking financial heartbreak by not protecting their homes from the winter weather, according to a new survey from Cornhill Direct. Indeed, the cost of a burst pipe claim alone can reach £3,500, says the insurer.
The survey of 1,000 people showed that 43% have no protective lagging around water pipes, 30% have no protective lagging around their water tank; 1 in 10 people don't know the location of their stopcock in the event of a burst pipe and 1 in 10 admitted they took no precautions to protect their home from the winter weather if they were going away; such as turning off the stopcock. Meanwhile, 38% don't believe there is anything they can do to protect their homes from a severe drop in temperature.
Simon Coughlin of Cornhill Direct, said: "The winter weather is the biggest cause of domestic emergencies. When a cold snap bites, pipes can freeze and overworked central heating systems break down.
"Before it gets too cold, people should inspect their pipes for cracks, leaks or other damage. Learn where the stopcock is so you can limit water damage if a pipe bursts."
During the last 12 months, nearly 50% of callers to the insurer's 24hr Home Emergency helpline have needed immediate help with plumbing or drainage problems caused by burst pipes or blocked drains. A further 23% reported problems with their heating systems.
