Avoid false sense of security on home damage this winter

Homeowners have been warned to avoid a false sense of security after research revealed that as many as 19.7 million Brits could be left unprepared for a severe weather snap this winter.

Warmer than average temperatures coupled with low precipitation in October and November have meant that 40% of householders have yet to take measures to protect their properties from frozen pipes and boiler problems, according to Direct Line.

This is all the more surprising because of last winter’s particularly cold conditions, with average temperatures falling below freezing. It is estimated that three million Brits fell victim to some form of property damage as a result.

Of insurance claims made, roof damage accounted for 35%, frozen or burst pipes accounted for 31%, central heating failure accounted for 16%, and 15% experienced a boiler breakdown.

This year, the research suggests that the younger generation – aged 18-34 – are least likely to be prepared, and will be most vulnerable to pending property damage. 55% are yet to lag pipes, have their boiler inspected, or have any existing structural damage to their property repaired. However, the older generation are shown to be much better prepared, with 74% of those aged 55+ reporting themselves to have examined ways to prevent winter property damage.

When determined by region, Londoners are the least likely to have taken preventive measures for the winter, with an estimated 50% of properties yet to be secured from wintery conditions. The Midlands are next in line, with 42%-43% of homes yet to be protected. The most diligent regions of the UK include Scotland and Northern Ireland, where 66% and 71% respectively have taken preventative measures to protect their homes.

The times are difficult enough without the winter chills blasting a hole in your finances. Do you have adequate home and contents insurance to cover your home if a serious problem emerges? If not, visit Which4U’s insurance listings today.
