A recent survey carried out by the Association of British Insurers has suggested that around £15 million has been claimed by home-owners due to frozen pipes. The figures prompted insurance provider 'The AA' to release a warning, urging home-owners to carry out necessary precautions against this occurring.
According to AA Insurance, householders should take measures to prevent their pipes from freezing, such as ensuring pipes are properly insulated, avoiding exposure to the cold.
These alarming figures came as Britain hit cold periods this winter. The frozen water in the pipes can cause problems supplying hot water to homes, and also result in burst pipes, leading to flood damage.
Simon Douglas, the director of AA Insurance, was concerned that people had become less vigilant against the common problem due to the milder winters experienced in Britain over recent years.
"The cold snap is a reminder that burst pipes can cause serious water damage to both buildings and contents such as carpets and furniture. As well as dealing with an insurance claim, you face the major hassle of drying out and repairing your home," he said.
AA Insurance has advised homeowners to ensure that pipes most exposed to the cold should be properly insulated. Another important point made by the AA was to ensure people are aware of where their stopcock is located, allowing them to cut the water off should they experience any flooding.
People should also keep their neighbours informed as to when they are away for extended periods, not just for the obvious reasons of burglary, but because damaged pipes can cause catastrophic damage over short periods of time, so it is important to have somebody keep an eye on your property.
