Hitting the slopes could be costly

With an estimated one million UK travellers embarking on a winter sports holiday this season, Post Office travel services is advising skiers and snowboarders to make sure they have adequate travel insurance to avoid falling down the slippery slope of expensive bills, should they have an accident.

Research from the firm shows that the popularity of France, Austria and Italy as winter holiday destinations is reflected in the number of claims - almost a third (32%) of which are made for accidents occurring at French resorts.

Meanwhile, 33% of ski/winter sports claims last year were for medical costs, with the average cost being £1,200. 16% of claims were for lost or stolen luggage, while 10% were for cancellation or non-departure.

Skiers/snowboarders between the ages of 18-29 are most prone to accidents, followed by those aged 40-49. 18-29 year olds were also most likely to lose their baggage or have it stolen.
