Brits waste 32 million hours by side of road

New research by Prudential Car Insurance reveals that 72% of British motorists have broken down and 61% have had to wait over an hour at the side of the road. Despite the alarming incidence of breakdowns, at least 16% did not have any sort of breakdown cover.

The top reason (18%) cited by those surveyed was that breakdown cover was too expensive. Against this backdrop, and until October 31st, breakdown cover from Green Flag will be free with every new Prudential Car Insurance policy.

Breaking the numbers down on breakdowns, 23% have broken down 3-5 times, while 4% have broken down over 10 times.

Meanwhile, Northerners are least likely to breakdown (24% have never broken down) while Londoners are most likely to (16% have never broken down).

If you want to avoid a breakdown then self evidently get your car serviced at regular intervals.

Check oil and water and tyre pressure before setting off.

Take water, provisions and food in case you have to wait for assistance.

Make sure you have your phone to call for help.
