One in seven motorists have been subjected to car vandalism in the last year, according to a new survey revealing the extent of car crime in the UK.
The Direct Line car insurance survey reveals that 60 per cent of car owners have suffered damage to their vehicle at some point, with each insurance claim costing an average £267.
More than half of car owners say their vehicles have been keyed, a third say their windows have been smashed, and just over a quarter have had their antennas bent.
Regarding more serious crimes, 14 per cent of motorists have had their car tyres punctured, and four per cent have had their vehicle graffitied.
Motorists' fear of car crime reflects the survey's findings; eight out of ten drivers worry about where they park their cars.
London was cited as the most feared city for car vandalism, followed by Liverpool, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow.
Emma Holyer, Direct Line's Motor spokesperson said: "Direct Line deals with many vandalism claims every year for our customers and it?s a growing concern for all car owners. Many motorists believe this type of crime only happens in inner cities or car parks whereas your car is actually most at risk parked in a quiet dark street away from any street lamps.
"We would urge motorists to use their garage or driveway if they have one and always try to park in well-lit open areas. In addition, make sure any car parks you use have good lighting and are well supervised."
