The average breakdown costs drivers without relevant cover around £65, Tesco Car Breakdown has warned.
Relying on local garages to recover your broken down vehicle can cost motorists more than double the cost of an entire year's cover with Tesco, the company claims.
Tesco Car Breakdown, which surveyed 128 local garages across 11 regions of the UK, found that one garage in Wales charged £500 to attend a recovery in Snowdonia.
The survey also revealed that four out of ten garages polled were unable to rescue stranded motorists.
Allan Burns, head of Car Breakdown Cover at Tesco says: "Many motorists have a tendency to take an 'it?ll never happen to me' attitude, but with thousands of car breakdowns attended every week, they could be picking up a very large bill when a garage picks up their car."
The study reveals that the most expensive region to break down is the West Midlands, with an average call out charge of £75.20, while the least expensive region was the north-east at an average of £47.84.
Mr Burns added: "Quality breakdown cover is now more affordable than ever. For just 10p per day we can give motorists the peace of mind that your safety and your wallet will be well looked after should the unexpected happen."
