There may be no time like the present to seek out a new gas and electric tariff, it has been suggested.

As people look to get their finances under control as the new year gets under way, seeking out a new utilities deal could prove to be a wise idea.

Such is the assertion of Jane Baker, who notes in a lovemoney.com article that although seeking out a new energy tariff "may take a little time and effort" it will be worthwhile.

Indeed, she notes that electricity and gas bills can "really spiral out of control" if consumers fail to keep a close eye on them, although seeking out an online deal could help those looking to manage costs.

Ms Baker also claims that using the same supplier for both utilities can be of assistance, while around 90 per cent of those who compare accounts in the quest for a better deal will save an average of £100.

Last month, John Fitzsimons advised in a lovemoney.com article that getting a competitive deal is the most "obvious" thing consumers can do in ensuring they are not paying over the odds for energy, pointing out the introduction of new tariffs from First:Utility and OVO Energy "has shaken up the market".
