The Woolwich was the trading name of the Woolwich Building Society, founded in 1847 and was one of the first 'permanent' building societies. It is now a trading name of Barclays Bank PLC.
The Woolwich was one of the largest UK building societies, and sponsored local football team Charlton Athletic.
The Woolwich Equitable Building Society became a PLC in 1997 which formed Woolwich PLC.
In 2000, Woolwich PLC was bought by Barclays, although The Woolwich brand-name still remains and the Woolwich Head Office is still located in Bexleyheath, London.
In June 2006, Barclays announced that The Woolwich was to become the Barclays UK mortgage brand, supported by Barclays branches.

Woolwich mortgages, Woolwich also offers a wide variety of personal, premier and business financial products which include current accounts, savings accounts, insurance, loans, credit cards and financial planning.
